I built an AI headshot app for $9.9 once. No subscription. Here's the math.
0 viewsEveryone's building AI headshot apps. I built one anyway. Here's why it's different and what it costs me to run.
ShutterAI — upload 3-10 selfies, pick a style, get 12 studio-quality headshots.
$9.9 once. No subscription. No watermark.
The math:
- AI generation costs me ~$0.08 per image
- 12 images per customer = ~$1 of AI cost
- $9.9 price − $1 cost = ~90% margin
- Every 10 customers ≈ $90 profit
The subscription trap is everywhere. Every SaaS wants $29/mo forever. For a one-time product like headshots, that's wrong. You get your photos, you're done. Paying monthly for that is insane.
The anti-abuse system took longer than the app:
- 1 free trial per device (fingerprint + IP, clearing cache doesn't work)
- watermarked preview on free trials
- license codes that check against the payment provider in real-time
- refunded or disputed orders → code dies instantly
No one pays if freeloading is easier than paying.
The hard part isn't the model. It's distribution. I'm writing this instead of buying ads.
